Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 is the third of the six separate pools in which you bet on the Derby winner months ahead. For 2026 it ran January 16-18 and closed with "All Others" as the 7-2 favorite and Ted Noffey, the unbeaten Breeders' Cup Juvenile champion, as the 6-1 individual favorite, according to Thoroughbred Daily News. Pool 3 offered Win and Exacta pools, a $2 minimum win bet, and no refunds, per TwinSpires.

What that early price can be worth: a $2 win ticket on California Chrome paid $7 on Derby day, when he went off as the 5-2 favorite. The same $2 on the same horse in the same race paid $63.40 for anyone who had bought it in Pool 2, according to Churchill Downs. In Pool 3 it paid $67.60.

Each pool is a separate pari-mutuel pool, open for two to 10 days at a time between late fall and early April. You bet before the 20-horse field exists, at a price that locks when that pool closes. Early Derby odds in October and November come from these pools. They answer whether a bet made now can pay more than one made in May, and what it costs you to try.

That cost is the whole story. The long price is not a reward for being early. It is payment for carrying a risk the race-day bettor never touches: your horse may never reach the starting gate, and once the ticket is bought, the money is not coming back.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3, January 2026

Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager for the 2026 Derby ran January 16 to 18, 2026, according to Thoroughbred Daily News. It was the third of six separate pools, and every ticket in it was settled by the official results of the Derby on May 2, 2026, TwinSpires noted.

The betting favorite when Pool 3 closed was not a single horse. "All Others," the pari-mutuel field, finished at 7-2, BloodHorse reported. The shortest individual price belonged to Ted Noffey at 6-1. He is a son of Into Mischief and was unbeaten through four starts going into 2026, the Paulick Report wrote. His 2025 wins included the Grade 1 Hopeful, the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, per Thoroughbred Daily News.

Behind him, the closing prices included:

  • Paladin, the Chad Brown-trained Remsen winner, at 14-1
  • Chief Wallabee, trained by Bill Mott and a debut maiden winner at Gulfstream, at 17-1

Both prices are from Thoroughbred Daily News.

The rules matched the other pools. Pool 3 offered a win pool and an exacta pool with a $2 minimum win bet, and no refunds were given on any wager, TwinSpires states. That last rule is the one that matters most. A horse you back in January who misses the Derby is a losing ticket. The official Kentucky Derby site adds that each set of pools stays open for 2 to 10 days, and that some pools also offer daily double wagers.

A price that stops moving

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 ran January 16 to 18, 2026, and closed with "All Others" as the 7-2 favorite and Ted Noffey, the unbeaten Breeders' Cup Juvenile champion, as the 6-1 individual favorite, per Thoroughbred Daily News. Paladin, the Chad Brown-trained Remsen winner, was 14-1, and Chief Wallabee was 17-1. Anyone who bet in Pool 3 kept those prices through the May 2 race.

Pool 3 was one of six pools Churchill Downs ran for the 152nd Derby: October 29 to 31, November 27 to 30, January 16 to 18, February 13 to 15, March 13 to 15 and April 2 to 4. A Sire Future Wager ran with the November pool, and the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager ran with the March one. Each window opened at noon Eastern and closed at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Each pool is its own pot. Pool 2 offered 23 individually named horses plus one "All Others" interest covering every 3-year-old not on the list, 24 choices in all. In some years the menu has run as long as 39 named horses plus the field. Your money goes into the pool with everyone else's, and the odds come from where that money lands. Whatever price stands when the window shuts is your price, however the horse runs afterward. Race-day odds, by contrast, keep moving until post time.

Churchill's own pools take win bets and exactas, which ask you to name the first two finishers. How exactas work is the same idea here, only months early. Some retail outlets offer the futures as win bets only, with a $2 minimum, and TwinSpires gives no refunds on any future wager.

The pools are small, so a modest amount of money can move a price. Pool 1 in 2025 handled $184,492, of which $143,448 was win money and $41,044 exacta money. The Derby itself drew $215.97 million in commingled wagering the following May, per the Daily Racing Form.

Three tickets worth reading

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 ran January 16-18, 2026, and closed with "All Others" as the 7-2 favorite and Ted Noffey, the unbeaten Breeders' Cup Juvenile champion, as the 6-1 individual favorite, Thoroughbred Daily News reported. Behind them came Paladin, the Chad Brown-trained Remsen winner, at 14-1 and Bill Mott's Chief Wallabee at 17-1. Like every pool, it offered a Win pool and an Exacta pool, with a $2 minimum and no refunds, TwinSpires notes.

Ted Noffey shows how the market reprices a horse. He closed at 10-1 in Pool 1 for the 2026 Derby and opened as the 6-1 individual morning-line favorite in Pool 2 after winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He was still 6-1 when Pool 3 closed January 18, when a $2 win ticket was set to return $15.34, Horse Racing Nation reported. That figure is a little more than 6-1 alone would pay, because the displayed odds are rounded down.

The field is the second thing to recognize. "All Other Colts and Geldings" closed as the 6-5 favorite in that same Pool 1 and drifted to 7-2 by Pool 3. According to DRF, the field has closed as Pool 1 favorite in every year of the wager's roughly two-decade history, since most eventual Derby starters have not yet shown anything in October.

Orb is the third. For his 2013 Derby, a $2 win ticket on him paid $5.20 if bought in Pool 1, $26.20 in Pool 2 and $29.60 in Pool 3. It was one horse and one result, paid at three different prices, each fixed when its pool closed. And two years ago, Sovereignty closed at 19-1 in Pool 2 before winning the 151st Derby.

Not a race-day bet made early

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 is one of six separate sets of wagering pools in the futures product, and it ran January 16-18, 2026 (Thoroughbred Daily News). It is easy to mistake for an ordinary win bet placed ahead of time, but it is a different product with different rules. Pool 3 offered a Win pool and an Exacta pool, required a $2 minimum win wager, and allowed no refunds on any bet (TwinSpires).

The refund line is the one to take seriously. BettingUSA calls it the defining difference: a futures ticket stays live only as long as the horse keeps earning his way into the gate through the Road to the Kentucky Derby points system.

Before the first pool opens this fall

Treat a futures bet as a price you are buying against a horse's chance of simply making the race. The check before you bet is concrete. Ask what this horse would likely be on Derby day if everything goes right, and whether today's price is long enough to cover the months in which things can go wrong. A 20-1 horse who wins a major prep can tighten to 4-1 by Pool 5 or 6, which is the upside. The downside is a ticket on a horse who never runs in May, and it pays nothing. Early on, the field option buys coverage of every unknown, but at 6-5 it pays very little for it.

The Derby 153 cycle is already forming. Bob Baffert's Salahudin is 3-for-3 after winning the Iroquois on September 12 with a 96 Brisnet Speed Rating, earning 10 qualifying points, and the way that Iroquois was run is worth reading before you put a price on him. The sources behind this piece do not yet include Churchill Downs' pool dates for the 2027 Derby, which is set for May 1. If the usual pattern holds, Pool 1 will close before the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on October 30, so the first prices will be set without knowing that race's result.

California Chrome's $63.40 was paid because he got to the gate. The rule that made that ticket so cheap is the same rule that would have kept the money if he hadn't.
